Description
Dry cupping is a therapeutic technique that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, pulling the skin and underlying tissues upward. This therapy, which has ancient roots in traditional Chinese medicine, is used to treat pain, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation by increasing blood flow to the area. Cups are left on the skin for several minutes or are moved across the skin, and while circular marks may appear, they typically fade within a day or two.Â
How it works
- Suction: A vacuum is created in the cup, either by using a flame to heat the air inside or by using a manual hand pump to remove air after it’s placed on the skin.
- Blood flow: The suction pulls blood to the surface, which is thought to increase oxygen and nutrient content in the soft tissues and break up adhesions.
- Healing: This process can create a form of sterile inflammation that prompts the body’s healing response.
- Movement: In some cases, the cups are moved along the skin, similar to a deep tissue massage, or are left in a single spot (static cupping).Â
